If you’re planning to hit the roadways, airports or trains to celebrate the end of a gloomy 2009 and usher a hopeful 2010 – how about a few tips on travelling green.

Keeping your green-tude safe while sleeping doesn’t have to be a chore. Resources for finding eco-friendly trips and pillow pads are available online through a number of sites including:

Getting there is aided by organizations like:

  • Sustainable Travel International offering carbon offsets (who doesn’t these days?) along with tips and tricks on keeping green
  • The Green Travel Market offers a database of travel providers, accomodations and tours
  • If you are heading to Maui you can get a french fry loving VW Bug at Bio Beetle
  • CONTEXT offers European sustainable tourism options

And, if getting your sustainable travel bug satisfied gives you a headache… Consider working locally to plan for sustainable travel in your home community. Yes, we’re back on the pitch to be active in your community’s General Plan process. While we’re on it, you can also hit an eco-travel convention at Lake Tahoe next fall.

If you opt for a cozier celebration try a few of these eco-celebratory tips:

  • Organic, and local, bubbly from Jeriko Estate in Mendocino, Heller Estate in Carmel, or Korbel on the Russian River
  • Recycled, and chic, glassware
  • Banging the pots and pans like Grandma did on New Year’s Eve
  • A quick trip to your Farmer’s Market for local festive fare to keep your chic intact, celebrate local agriculture and rest easy

For a little post New Year’s Eve celebration, the San Jose Bike Party is offering a New Years Resolution Test Ride. Dust off your resolve, grab a bike and go.

Note: in doing the research for this story I was surprised there wasn’t more info on green celebrations in Silicon Valley. If I overlooked ideas, tips, tricks or local green celebrations shoot me a line and I’ll get the word out.
