Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet

It’s a choice. Do you celebrate the influx of rain with all the annoying side effects or do you complain vigorously?

I hope you celebrate.

Yes, I occasionally grump and moan about the rain as well look forward to a post rain sunny day. In the main, I love the rain. Love rainy days with the built in excuse, should it be needed, to brew a huge pot of tea, grab one of the many books on my “must read” list and settle in for a good read. I also love heading out to a favorite trail in a workout-functional rain jacket. It is a wonderful thing to be the only one surrounded by so much beauty. As an added side benefit, there’s all that rain to keep your body temperature just right.

The Sierra snowpack was just above normal a week ago. Locally, only Vasona is at capacity. Our primary water supplies, Guadalupe, Lexington, Calero and Almaden are below capacity with plenty of room to allow for additional rainfall. There is little chance of flooding but a good chance we are not out of the woods when it comes to a drought.

So, join me in doing the happy dance while the rain continues to fall. And, when the sun comes out, celebrate the joys of seeing your meter run backwards – if you have solar panels.

To get you started on creative thinking about ways to have fun, indoors and out, here are a few ideas…

  • grab the galoches, plop the kids into theirs, go play in the puddles. The kids will be amazed and amused that you encourage crazy puddle play.
  • pitch a tent in the backyard, fill a thermos with your favorite hot beverage, snuggle under warm blankets and tell tales.
  • put on your best hiking boots, dress warmly, grab your main squeeze and head to the hills for a hike in your favorite outdoor place. End the day at a friendly diner with chili and good cheer.
  • call a few friends, make a pot of hearty soup and hunker down for a rainy day marathon. (I’d opt for catching up on Dexter, but might be too creepy for some)
  • going solo? Head over to the Camera Cinemas for a warm seat, hot coffee and a great flick.
  • Or, check out this Facebook group dedicated to rainy day fun.
